Hey hey! My name is Eboni and I'm a bilingual creative professional living in Yokohama, Japan who is originally from Atlanta, GA, USA. I create both language and lifestyle content.

WHAT iS EBONIHONGO?
EBONIHONGO（エボニホンゴ）とは
Ebonihongo is my social media handle and it's a combination of my first name, Eboni, and the word nihongo, which is the Japanese word for ‘Japanese language.’
EbonihongoとはSNSのユーザーネームで、下の名前の「Eboni」（音：エボニー）と「nihongo」（音：日本語）の混成語です。

MY VISION | ビジョンとは？
I want to inspire learners to see that it is indeed possible to gain fluency of the Japanese language.
実際に日本語が流暢になるのがあり得ることを学習者にインスパイアさせたいと思っている。
This reason for this vision is mainly because there tends to be a large dropoff of learners in the elementary stage due to the difficulty of Japanese, particularly for learners whose native language is not an East Asian language. As a Black person myself, I particularly hope to inspire my fellow Black people to become advanced and fluent in the language. Throughout my 10 years of study, one thing I have realized is that there are very few black people studying the language and very few of us become advanced or even fluent at Japanese. One reason for this is that many of us unfortunately don't have that support to study Japanese or even East Asian languages in our communities since I think for much of the Black community, these cultures and their languages are still much of the unknown and when we express wanting to take part in this, our intentions are judged or we're even seen as weird. With all this in mind and in combination with learners dropping out at the beginning stages, it makes sense why there are very few Black people who have well-spoken Japanese to even look up to in the first place.
このビジョンを選んだ理由は、日本語が非常に難しい言語だと言われ、特に母語が東アジア言語でない学習者が初級の日本語を勉強してからすぐ辞めてしまう傾向がある。それで、私は黒人として、黒人の学習者も上級者、または流暢になるためにインスパイアさせたいです。現在まで10年も日本語を勉強している間気が付いたのが、日本語を勉強する黒人が少ないやあまりいないのと、勉強する黒人の中で上級や流暢になる学習者が少ないことです。理由としては、黒人のコミュニティーでは東アジアの文化や日本の文化がある程度にまだまだ知られていなく、黒人の誰かはそれらを勉強したいと決め、相手が首を傾げてしまうとか相手に変に思われるケースが多いらしい。その結果、周りの黒人が応援してくれないケースが結構多いのです。というわけで、その現象と以前話した初級レベルで辞める学習者のことを考えると、なぜ尊敬できる、流暢に話せる黒人があまりいないのはよく分かります。
The above phenomenons are what I want to change and I want to at least start that change through my content. The great Mahatma Gandhi said, "Be the change that you want to see in the world" and so, here I am. I have come to inspire the world not only as someone who has become fluent at Japanese but as a -black- person who has done so. Anyways, as I say at the end of most of my short-form videos, I hope that you'll follow for more on what it's like living and working in Japan as a black girl who speaks fluent Japanese.
それで、上記の現象が変わってほしいという希望があり、SNSのコンテンツを通して頑張って変えていきたいとおもいます。運動指導者のガンジーが「あなたが見たい世の中の変化にあなたがなりなさい」と言っていたらしく、その言葉を覚えておきながら活躍してきています。日本語が流暢に話せる人だけではなく、流暢に話せる黒人で世界中の学習者にインスパイアさせたいと思っています。
